Free one-on-one advising: the Nevada SBDC

The Nevada Small Business Development Center calls itself a statewide business assistance outreach program. It is powered by the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Business and receives funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration (Nevada SBDC home page, nevadasbdc.org, checked 2026-10-16). Its network lists centers including Carson City, Douglas County, Fernley, Fallon and Reno.

The Carson City center is hosted by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at the Adams Hub, 111 West Proctor St, Carson City, NV 89703. Appointments are made through (800) 240-7094, and advising is free of charge (Nevada SBDC, Carson City center page, nevadasbdc.org, checked 2026-10-16). Listed services include market research, accounting and recordkeeping help, capital formation and start-up advising.

Preparing for an SBDC appointment

  • Bring last year's tax return and a current profit and loss statement
  • Bring a draft cash flow projection, even a rough one
  • Write down the one decision you need help with
  • Ask the adviser to point out what a lender would question

Economic development and business groups

The Northern Nevada Development Authority hosts the SBDC's Carson City center, as noted above. Chambers of commerce and the city-county's own economic development office also work with local owners.

Registration offices

State registration and the state business license are handled through the Nevada Secretary of State's online business portal; our state license guide explains it. Local licenses come from Carson City for businesses inside the city-county, and from the county or town for businesses in Douglas, Lyon, Washoe or Storey County communities.

Federal: the SBA

The U.S. Small Business Administration funds the SBDC network and backs loans made by approved lenders. SBA loans are not something Truepine Business Funding makes or arranges.

Help for owners in nearby counties

The Nevada SBDC's network list includes a Douglas County center as well as Carson City, so owners in Minden, Gardnerville or the Lake Tahoe communities of Douglas County have an option closer to home (Nevada SBDC home page, nevadasbdc.org, checked 2026-10-16). Owners in Dayton and other Lyon County communities can contact the Carson City center or the network's other locations, such as Fernley.

Before you pay for help

Free public programs cover most of what a small business needs to prepare a funding request. Be cautious of paid services that promise approval, grants or funding in exchange for an upfront fee. Any legitimate adviser will explain what they charge and what you get before you agree.

Grants

Grants are not something we offer or arrange. Grants for operating businesses are scarce and usually tied to a specific purpose, place or program. An SBDC adviser can tell you whether any current program fits; be wary of anyone charging a fee to find you a grant.
